County Kilkenny

Kilkenny, like much of central Ireland is mainly rolling hills and farmland without the harsher terrain associated with Irelands mountains and coasts.

Kilkenny has ben referred to as an offshoot of the historical root name of Concradha. The Crowes here have their own coat of arms, different to the Clare Crowes coat of arms

The reasons for this is not debated here but there was some movement of the Crowe families to and from the Cashel area and even in present times some Crowes have family lines in both counties The families seem to be spread out, with no single focus, even in Kilkenny City

Parish of Inistoge and the St Leger Family

Apart from the St Leger, a famous horse race in England, more English names are found here than in the rest of Ireland due to the close proximity of Welsh and English ports. Horse breeding and racing in Ireland is often found in this region and remains a popular sport and day out for families.

Although the whole of Ireland is exposed to harsh Atlantic storms, things are slightly easier on the east side of Ireland.

The Walter Crowe Tree and Kilkenny county

The tree is formed in Clonoulty Parish and is one of the streams from Glenanee. However, it is an example of the connections that still exist between the two counties. Many existing relatives from the two counties are still in touch. In this case the Crowes are linked several times to occupations in the railway system and here and in the case of Morgan Crowe (elsewhere) find themselves linked to Kilkenny again.

THe City of Kilkenny

The city, like a few others, had RC records before permission was given in 1801. There were many conflagrations and political changes in Ireland and England before the Union was formed in 1901, with various 'reforms' that allowed more freedoms for catholics but also came with its own problems. Many people had fled Ireland during the 1790s troubles and many people didn't like being recorded as they could be targeted by authorities. In this case the records remain linked to successive generations as shown in the chart.
